The visionary discourse of German mystic Jacob Boehme (1575-1624) influenced the philosophy of Hegel and Schelling as well as the English and German Romantics. In this study, O'Regan (theology, U. of Notre Dame) examines the claim made by 19th-century theologians that Boehme's thinking represented the return of ancient Gnosis within the Protestant tradition. Coverage includes, for example, Boehme's narrative of the agonistic divine self-development, his departures from the common theological tradition, and his discourse as an instance of Valentinian narrative grammar.
